Metal sheet and metal strip blanking
Sheet metal blanking is a way to shape metal to obtain semi-finished parts or finished parts of a flat shape. It uses a press to push a metal sheet between a punch and a die. The punch cuts out a piece of metal with the same shape as the punch and die. A precise gap between the punch and die called the “stamping clearance” is crucial for clean cuts. There are pure stamping systems, where it is possible to obtain finished blanked parts. In forming dies, blanking is typically the first step. It creates a semi-finished part that will be further shaped through processes like bending, coining, and deep drawing. Blanking can also be used within these multi-stage processes to create features like holes or complex profiles, especially when the design requires them to be formed in intermediate stages.
